OSAP Announces Industry’s First Video Contest
The Organization for Safety and Asepsis Procedures (OSAP, Annapolis, MD) has announced a “YouTube” style contest for video clips that promote infection control in the operatory. Anyone can enter the I See IC Dental Reality Contest by uploading a video clip or photograph on the OSAP website. The video clips and images will be posted on www.OSAP.org, where visitors can vote for their favorites.

To enter the I See IC Contest, participants should prepare a video clip of up to 90 seconds in length that either captures good infection control procedures in action or unmasks the hazards of poor technique. Clips may be serious, humorous, or downright offbeat, as long as they get their message across. A link on the OSAP website will allow entrants to upload their video clips for consideration. The deadline for submissions is December 31, 2007. A panel of judges will evaluate the clips for scientific and creative merit. Prizes will be awarded both to the judges’ choice and the winner of the popular vote.

Contest rules and criteria for acceptable entries will be posted on the OSAP website. There is no charge to enter. All entries become the property of OSAP. For more information, go to www.OSAP.org.

Aetna Dental® Continuing Education Focuses on Connection Between Periodontal Disease and Overall Health

 Aetna Dental® (Hartford, CT) is offering a continuing education (CE) course to participating dentists on the relationship between periodontal disease and chronic conditions, including pregnant women and individuals with diabetes or cardiovascular disease. The course, titled “Systemic Conditions and Periodontal Disease,” offers dental practitioners three CE credits free of charge.

“Research showing that there is a correlation between chronic diseases and periodontal disease continues to mount, elevating the role of the dental profession in the management of overall health,” said Mary Lee Conicella, DMD, Aetna’s national director of clinical operations.

Aetna is offering the course following the implementation of its Dental/Medical Integration (DMI) program that combines educational outreach about dental care with enhanced dental benefits to members who are pregnant or have diabetes, coronary artery disease, or cerebrovascular disease. A study conducted by Aetna and the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine (New York, NY) found that high-risk individuals who sought earlier dental care lowered the risk or severity of their conditions and subsequently lowered their overall medical costs.

Through its relationship with Columbia, Aetna has introduced five continuing education courses that have focused on radiology, dental sealant application, fluoride, and the early diagnosis and treatment of tooth decay, and provided to dentists’ offices its work on tobacco cessation and dental/medical integration. Columbia also provides the content for Aetna’s dental education website, Simple Steps to Better Dental Health®.

Materialise and BIOMET 3i Sign Cooperative Agreement for CT-Guided Dental Implant Placement and Provisionalization Solutions
