Alexandria, Va., USA– The American Association for Dental Research (AADR) is pleased to announce that the AADR Anne D. Haffajee Fellowship is the first endowed AADR Fellowship as part of the AADR Matching Campaign that launched in 2014. This Fellowship is endowed thanks to generous donors and the AADR Board of Directors, which is matching donations to fund the endowment at $250,000 allowing for at least one Fellowship of $10,000 to be granted annually. As the fund grows with additional contributions, additional fellowships and/or larger grants can be provided.

The Anne D. Haffajee Fellowship was created in recognition of Dr. Haffajee's many contributions to clinical research in Periodontology and Oral Biology and her prominence as a female leader in the field. The immediate goal of this fellowship is to support women researchers at the early stages of their scientific careers. The long term objective of this fellowship is to increase the representation of women at the higher ranks in science and academia in the field of Oral Biology.

For more than 30 years, Haffajee focused on clinical and translational periodontology research for the improvement of oral health. She also played an important role in paving the way for the next generation of women in periodontal science. Further, she was a dedicated wife and mother of two wonderful daughters, and was a great example of finding the elusive work-life balance. Haffajee passed away on August 16, 2013, at 65 years old following a long battle with cancer. Her mentee and friend Flavia Teles created the fellowship, for which an endowment was started with a very generous gift from Haffajee's husband, Charles Haffajee.

The AADR Anne D. Haffajee Fellowship is open to women members of AADR who: are within 10 years of their last professional degree; have demonstrated a commitment to a research career in oral biology as well as academic promise, which will be evaluated based on the candidate's CV, project and the support demonstrated in the supervisor/department head letter; hold a D.D.S./D.M.D. and/or Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree; and hold an appointment at the post-doctoral, instructor, assistant professor level or equivalent at a research/academic institution.

Another example relates to a product category in which NuSmile was not previously involved. For years, pediatric dentists had been asking for a luting cement that would be ideal for bonding not only zirconia crowns, but stainless steel crowns and space maintainers. As these dentists’ restoration options expanded, their cement armamentarium did as well, increasing their inventories and creating unwanted complexity. Glass ionomer cements were the most common choice for use with preveneered and stainless steel crowns, as fluoride release was an important criterion. YORBA LINDA, Calif. - With price pressure in the marketplace heating up, ceramists are being forced to find new and innovative ways to create restorations with larger profit margins. To address that concern, VITA North America recently offered a Premium Porcelain course, led by renowned instructor Bobby Williams, CDT, to teach participants how to use the industry’s most aesthetic porcelain to create profitable restorations.

“The job of a ceramist is getting more challenging because they have to contend with greater price pressure in the marketplace,” Williams says. “In this course we showed them how they could leverage VITA VM13 and 3D shade-matching techniques to deliver a much more accurate shade-matching porcelain with a higher profit margin.”

The two-day, hands-on workshop walked students through the details of an accurate and repeatable model process, followed by a step-by-step advanced layering technique of VM13 ceramics.Under Williams’ direction, attendees focused on creating ideal working refractory models and dies, preparing refractory dies for porcelain application and manipulating layering techniques to mimic natural dentition. Students also learned the importance of internal staining with fluorescence, contour, texture, and final polishing techniques. In the hands-on portion, participants applied their newfound knowledge and artistic abilities to produce their own esthetic and profitable restoration, all in VITA North America’s state-of-the art Training Center.

ST. LOUIS (May 3, 2016) — The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) elected officers for 2016-17 and installed a new member of the Board of Trustees at its 116th Annual Session, held recently in Orlando. The AAO is the world’s oldest and largest dental specialty organization with more than 18,000 members.

McCamish, DDS, MS, an orthodontist with offices in Chattanooga, Signal Mountain, and Ooltewah, Tennessee, has been elected president of the AAO.  Dr. McCamish is a past president of the Southern Association of Orthodontists (SAO), the Tennessee Association of Orthodontists (TAO), the Chattanooga Area Dental Society, and the University of Tennessee Orthodontic Alumni Association.  His AAO volunteer service includes eight years on the AAO Council on Orthodontic Practice (COOP), with two of those years as COOP chair.  Dr. McCamish is a Diplomate of The American Board of Orthodontics, a member of the College of Diplomates of The American Board of Orthodontics and a Fellow of both the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. 

“Following our Code of Ethics, the members of the AAO are dedicated to providing excellence in patient care, as are our colleagues throughout dentistry and healthcare, as a whole,” said Dr. McCamish.  “The members of the AAO will always continue to work cooperatively to advance dental education and research, and to be an advocate for dentistry and patients at all levels.”

Nahid Maleki, DDS, MS, an orthodontist practicing in Washington, D.C., has been elected the president-elect.  Dr. Maleki is a past president of the District of Columbia Society of Orthodontists, and has held several leadership positions with the Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontists (MASO), including its presidency, and serving as a MASO delegate to the AAO House of Delegates for 12 years.  She was the organization’s representative on the AAO Political Action Committee Board of Directors, and represented MASO on the AAO Council on Governmental (COGA) affairs for eight years, serving the last year as the COGA chair. 

Brent E. Larson, DDS, MS, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, has been elected the AAO secretary-treasurer.  Dr. Larson is the Director of the Division of Orthodontics and associate professor of orthodontics at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, and has a private orthodontic practice in Rochester, Minnesota.  Dr. Larson is a past president of the Midwestern Society of Orthodontists and of the Minnesota Association of Orthodontists.  In addition, he is a past chairman of the AAO Council on Information Technology, the AAO Task Force on Orthodontic Faculty Recruitment and Retention, and the AAO Council on Orthodontic Education.  Dr. Larson has served as the educational liaison to the editorial board of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, and spent 15 years as a reviewer and synopsis writer for Practical Reviews in Orthodontics, a monthly literature review publication distributed around the world. 

Steven Siegel, DMD, an orthodontist with offices in Glen Burnie and Reisterstown, Maryland, has been elected by the Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontists (MASO) as its trustee on the AAO Board of Trustees.  MASO serves orthodontists practicing in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania (east of the Alleghenies), Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.  Dr. Siegel was formally installed as MASO trustee at the recent AAO Annual Session.
