Alexandria, Va., USA– The American Association for Dental Research (AADR) is pleased to announce that the AADR Anne D. Haffajee Fellowship is the first endowed AADR Fellowship as part of the AADR Matching Campaign that launched in 2014. This Fellowship is endowed thanks to generous donors and the AADR Board of Directors, which is matching donations to fund the endowment at $250,000 allowing for at least one Fellowship of $10,000 to be granted annually. As the fund grows with additional contributions, additional fellowships and/or larger grants can be provided.
The Anne D. Haffajee Fellowship was created in recognition of Dr. Haffajee's many contributions to clinical research in Periodontology and Oral Biology and her prominence as a female leader in the field. The immediate goal of this fellowship is to support women researchers at the early stages of their scientific careers. The long term objective of this fellowship is to increase the representation of women at the higher ranks in science and academia in the field of Oral Biology.
For more than 30 years, Haffajee focused on clinical and translational periodontology research for the improvement of oral health. She also played an important role in paving the way for the next generation of women in periodontal science. Further, she was a dedicated wife and mother of two wonderful daughters, and was a great example of finding the elusive work-life balance. Haffajee passed away on August 16, 2013, at 65 years old following a long battle with cancer. Her mentee and friend Flavia Teles created the fellowship, for which an endowment was started with a very generous gift from Haffajee's husband, Charles Haffajee.
The AADR Anne D. Haffajee Fellowship is open to women members of AADR who: are within 10 years of their last professional degree; have demonstrated a commitment to a research career in oral biology as well as academic promise, which will be evaluated based on the candidate's CV, project and the support demonstrated in the supervisor/department head letter; hold a D.D.S./D.M.D. and/or Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree; and hold an appointment at the post-doctoral, instructor, assistant professor level or equivalent at a research/academic institution.
