5 Ways to Protect Your Braces, Aligners During Halloween

Posted on Thursday, October 8, 2015

ST. LOUIS, MO--(Marketwired - October 06, 2015) - For most children, October means one thing: Halloween candy. For orthodontists, it's a month for embracing a beautiful, healthy smile in honor of National Orthodontic Health Month.

Orthodontic-friendly recipes include Mummy Pizza Biscuits shown here

After all, we all know that Halloween treats tend to play tricks on patients.

That's why the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) offers these five timely tips to protect braces, aligners and other orthodontic "appliances" while protecting teeth from decay.

  1. Avoid sticky situations with your braces and aligners. Stay away from hard, sticky, crunchy or chewy candy and snacks. These include caramel, gummies, licorice, taffy, bubblegum (even the sugarless kind), jelly beans and soft drinks.

  2. Say "boo" to hard treats - including hard-shelled peanut candies, nuts or nut-filled candies, taco chips and popcorn (especially unpopped kernels). Whether in orthodontic treatment or not, no one should ever chew ice.

  3. Brush up! Sweets can cause cavities, which means brushing and flossing are more important than ever during the Halloween season. Orthodontic patients should be especially vigilant about brushing and flossing after consuming sugary or starchy foods.

  4. Spooktacular news: Not all Halloween candy is off-limits. Good alternatives include soft chocolates, peanut butter cups or other melt-in-your-mouth varieties. The AAO even offers orthodontic-friendly recipes for Halloween on its website at https://www.mylifemysmile.org/recipes.

  5. Make a commitment to oral health. Deciding to avoid hard and chewy sweetsbefore the Halloween season increases your rate of success -- and reduces the likelihood that you'll break braces.

"It's okay for orthodontic patients to enjoy some treats at Halloween," says Morris N. Poole, DDS, president of the AAO. "We want everyone to have fun on Halloween. At the same time, we encourage patients to enjoy acceptable treats in moderation, and take that extra couple of minutes to brush and floss. When orthodontic treatment is complete, and patients see their healthy and beautiful new smiles in the mirror, they will know all of their efforts were worthwhile."

Flower Mound Ideal Setting for Benco Dental Expansion

Posted on Wednesday, October 7, 2015

Flower Mound, TX— October 7, 2015 — A state ranked the best in the nation to do business for the past three years: Texas.

A town that celebrates 175 species of wildflowers and native prairie grasses still flourishing yearround since pioneer days: Flower Mound.

What better location for the third significant expansion within a decade for a company that has grown from a single downtown location to the largest privately-owned dental distribution company in the country?

Benco Dental, founded in 1930 by Benjamin Cohen, has remained family-owned and focused on its unique mission to “deliver success, smile after smile.” A ribbon-cutting event and open house will take place on October 8, in Flower Mound, Texas at Benco Dental’s newest design showroom. The company’s third Destination CenterPoint will enhance its level of commitment to the more than 35,000 dentists and dental laboratories the company currently services nationwide.

“As part of the Benco difference, we begin each initiative by asking ‘what does the customer want?’,” said Chuck Cohen, managing director of Benco Dental. “We realize that one of a dentist’s most precious commodities is time, so when we created the Destination CenterPoint concept, our goal was to deliver a broad array of products and services and insightful solutions in one place for customer convenience.”

The newest design showroom, located at 501 Lakeside Parkway, Ste. 100, Flower Mound, will enable Benco Dental to bring to the lower Midwest a selection of dental equipment and technology (North America’s largest) that has been referred to by practitioners in Costa Mesa, California, as the “Disneyland for dentists.” These Destination CenterPoints -- the inaugural showroom established in 2010 at the company’s Pennsylvania headquarters and the second following quickly in Southern California –- in addition to products, feature a hands-on design experience, to assist dentists in the redesigning or planning and construction of an office.

“Building a nationwide presence is contingent on a dedicated team.  We’ve only been able to grow and increase the offerings to our customers based on the commitment from our associates and vendor partners,” said Rick Cohen, managing director of Benco Dental.  “We empower great people to do great work, and their continuous investment is what made possible this expansion.”

Lou Mangino, vice president of operations of Benco Dental commented on the inspired work ethic, “Forty-five Benco Dental associates converged on Thursday, June 4, at our Grapevine Distribution Center after close of business and by Monday afternoon, customer orders were being processed at the new location in Flower Mound. It amounted to 3.5 very long days and the best teamwork and camaraderie I’ve ever seen.”

Members of the community and city officials are invited to join in the October 8 celebration, which will begin at 5:15 p.m., and will feature local dignitaries, representatives from both The Flower Mound and Coppell Chambers of Commerce. In addition to a welcome from guest speaker Lori Walker, Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce President, guests will be privy to an exclusive tour of the design showroom and the 135,000-square foot Distribution Center on premise, which began operation on June 8, 2015. Prior to that date, Benco Dental’s local distribution center –- one of five in the United States -- had been located one mile away in Grapevine, Texas for the past 11 years.  The Open House reception will allow guests to take part in live demonstrations of the process that makes same-day dentistry possible: Benco Dental’s OneVisit™ Solution.

“We are thrilled to welcome Benco Dental to Flower Mound and have them as a part of the Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce.  We look forward to partnering with Benco as they grow their business in our community!” said Lori Walker, Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce President.

October is National Orthodontist Month

Posted on Wednesday, October 7, 2015

HOUSTONOct. 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Every parent wants the best for their children and teeth are no exception. Cleanings, fillings and crowns are one thing, but when it comes to moving teeth into the perfect position for both health and aesthetics, choosing the right practitioner can be a bit confusing. Most important in the decision is choosing an Orthodontist, who is a specialist with extended training beyond dental school.

Comparing an orthodontist to a dentist is analogous to comparing a medical specialist to your primary care physician. Like the family doctor, dentists are excellent at covering a wide range of general issues. General dentists are not as trained or equipped, as orthodontists, to treat more complex orthodontic cases.

"Orthodontists are the experts when it comes to aligning teeth and correcting bites," said Dr. James Hanigan, DDS MS PA, and member of the Texas Association of Orthodontics and the American Association of Orthodontics. "Additionally, an Orthodontist will have access to the latest technology and practices when it comes to teeth alignment."

Orthodontists have an additional 3000+ hours of orthodontic training after dental school during their residency. The average dental school graduate gets less than 100 hours of orthodontic instruction, and most of those are text book hours, not time treating a patient.

Because orthodontics falls within the broader scope of dentistry, any licensed dentist can treat orthodontic cases. For the consumer, it can be hard to differentiate between an orthodontic specialist and a dentist who offers orthodontic services. Advertisements can be misleading or confusing. An office sign that says "orthodontics" does not necessarily mean the dentist is a specialist.  There are simple steps that any consumer can take to make sure they choose the right practitioner for their needs.

  • First, ask the dentist if they are an orthodontist or a general dentist who performs orthodontic treatment.

  • Second, visit the website for the American Association of Orthodontists (www.mylifemysmile.org) or the American Board of Orthodontics (www.americanboardortho.com) for a list of specialists in your area.

When it comes to your family's smile, informed decisions are best. If you take the time to research and understand what type of practitioner will best suit your family's needs, the result will be healthy, beautiful smiles for life.

Dr. James Hanigan is a member of the Texas Association of Orthodontists and the American Association of Orthodontists. The American Association of Orthodontists is committed to educating the public about the need for, and benefits of, orthodontic treatment and choosing an orthodontist for your care.  An orthodontist is a specialist and must complete two-to-three years of additional schooling and an accredited residency program to achieve this distinction. To find an orthodontist in your area, visitwww.mylifemysmile.org.

Pumerantz Lecture to Focus on Virtual Reality

Posted on Wednesday, October 7, 2015

Pomona, California (PRWEB) October 06, 2015 - W. Paul Brown, DDS, FICD, FACD, a pioneer in virtual reality, will serve as the keynote speaker for the seventh annual Dr. Philip Pumerantz Distinguished Lectureship Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at Western University of Health Sciences.

His topic will be “The Impact of Virtual Reality on Health Science Education.” The lectureship will begin at 7 p.m. in WesternU’s Health Education Center Lecture Hall I, 701 E. Second St., Pomona, Calif. 91766.

Brown is Consulting Associate Professor in the Division of Clinical Anatomy, Stanford School of Medicine. He practiced endodontics in Palo Alto, California for many years and was a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry and Clinical Assistant Professor at the UC San Francisco School of Dentistry. He is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists.

He is currently a digital imaging researcher and, until recently, was the co-director for two Stanford University undergraduate courses: Biomedical Visualization and Procedural Based Head & Neck Anatomy. He was also director of a summer intern program at Stanford University for exceptional high school and college students.

Brown developed systems that made possible the Anatomage Virtual Dissection Table, which is the centerpiece of WesternU’s J and K Virtual Reality Learning Center.

“The advances in imaging and imaging reconstructions (virtual reality) are progressing at a remarkable rate,” Brown said. “We now have the ability to access and make treatment decisions from anatomical information that was previously inaccessible. In addition, anything that we can visualize, we can measure. So we have the ability to digitally analyze and record patient data and therefore improve their medical care.”

Brown has been the Principal Investigator on 11 NIH grants involved with medical imaging, virtual reality and medical/dental surgical simulations and the development of curriculum authoring platforms. He has published three electronic atlases of anatomy used around the globe: “A Dental Anatomy and 3D Interactive Tooth Atlas,” “Electronic Atlas of Human Occlusion & the TMJ,” and “3-D Interactive Atlas of Skull Osteology.” He lectures extensively internationally on the use of anatomical virtual reality models for research and education.

Brown was the dentist for the San Francisco Zoo for 20 years and was co-director of the endodontic part of the general dental residency program at the Palo Alto VA hospital for 10 years.

Drs. Daljit and Elaine Sarkaria of Orange established the lectureship in 2009 in honor of WesternU’s founder and president emeritus, Dr. Philip Pumerantz, as part of a $5.1 million pledge to WesternU. The Sarkarias dedicated $100,000 of their pledge to create the lectureship to encourage and foster exemplary medical research, education and high-quality patient care.
