Louis F. Rose Presented With the AAP 2013 Gold Medal Award

PHILADELPHIANov. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on recommendations from the Leadership Development and Qualifications Committee, the Research Submissions Committee and the Education Committee, the Board of Trustees of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) selected Dr. Louis F. Rose, DDS, MD of Philadelphia as the recipient of the 2013 AAP Gold Medal Award. The highest award bestowed by the Academy, this award is given annually in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of periodontics.

An active contributor to the field of periodontics and the AAP for over 40 years, Dr. Rose became a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology (ABP) in 1980. He obtained his DDS from Temple University, his certificate in periodontics from theUniversity of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, and his MD from the Medical College of Pennsylvania (now the Drexel University School of Medicine). Beyond his academic credentials, his successful Philadelphia periodontal and implant practice, and significant contributions to the periodontal literature, Dr. Rose has increased general dentists' exposure to periodontics through his work as Editor-in-Chief of the Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry since 2008. His textbooks, including "Internal Medicine for Dentistry" and "Periodontics - Medicine, Surgery and Implants" are used extensively in dental schools across the nation.

Dr. Rose has served on many AAP committees, including the Education Committee and the Continuing Education Oversight Committee.  He was director of the American Board of Periodontology from 2005 to 2011.  He is also Clinical Professor of Periodontics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and has taught at Harvard and New York University. Outside of dentistry, he has also done extensive work with medical organizations, including serving as president of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, as a member of the Philadelphia College of Physicians and as professor of surgery and medicine at the Drexel University School of Medicine.

Dr. Rose was presented with the Gold Medal Award at the 99th Annual AAP Meeting in Philadelphia on Sunday, September 29, 2013.
