Embracing the Future of Dental Technology

Tips for integrating AI into your practice

Alicia Murria, RDH, MS

Artificial intelligence (AI) is here, it's now, and-if we don't get in front of things-it will turn us all into dinosaurs. AI refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think and learn like humans. AI can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and language translation. It involves the development of algorithms and computer programs that can process large amounts of data, recognize patterns, and make predictions or decisions based on that data.

The fear of AI replacing dental hygienists is a common concern, but it's important to look at the bigger picture, especially in the delivery of healthcare overall. There's nothing to be afraid of. Rather than replace dental hygienists, AI is more likely to transform the way we work by enhancing our capabilities. At every corner of the dental practice, AI is ready to lend support. Here's how:

Augmentation, Not Replacement

AI can handle repetitive and time-consuming tasks, such as confirmation calls, appointment reminders, and filling schedules. This allows dental professionals an opportunity to focus on more complex and nuanced aspects of patient care that require human empathy, judgment, and connection.

Improved Efficiency

By automating routine tasks like insurance claim submission, AI not only reduces the burden on administrative team members, but it also reduces the chance for insurance denials. Software can now enhance interaction with insurance companies by including correct language and photographs to supplement claims. Frontloading insurance claims with details and visual evidence of necessary treatment means more time for treatment planning and case presentation. This improved efficiency may lead to higher case acceptance and increased overall patient satisfaction due to insurance claim approvals.

Enhanced Evidence-BasedDecision Making

Evidence based decision making is the hallmark of dental hygiene. AI can process vast amounts of data quickly and accurately, providing the dental hygienist with valuable insights that may influence their recommendations. AI is routinely used in radiographic interpretation and digital scans to compile data that analyzes incremental change and alerts the clinician to problem areas. This valuable information is insightful and enhances our decision making. This evidence leads to a more accurate diagnosis, personalized treatment plans, and better patient outcomes.

Patient Engagement and Education

AI can help keep patients informed and engaged in their own care. For example, AI-powered post-appointment chatbots provide patients with information about their conditions and answer common questions, enhancing patient education and adherence. Asking for reviews may be a daunting task, but AI software simplifies the process, ensuring a seamless transition for gathering patient feedback.

Opportunities for New Roles

Social media is a pain point for many dental practices, and hygienists might have been tasked with managing accounts. If that is the case, AI can be utilized to create visuals, curate captions, and schedule posts. The integration of AI into social media will make stewardship easier, and it might even create new job opportunities and roles that don't currently exist.

Going Further With AI

Now that we've explored opportunities for AI to enhance dental hygiene appointments, let's delve into practical tips on integrating this technology into your daily workflow. By incorporating AI into your routine, you'll find that tasks become more efficient, patient interactions more meaningful, and your overall practice more effective and productive. Here are some tips on how you can start harnessing the power of AI in your dental hygiene practice:

Start Small

You don't need to overhaul your entire practice overnight. Start with one or two AI-powered tools, such as diagnostic imaging software or a smart scheduling system. This will give you a chance to get comfortable with the technology and see its benefits firsthand.

Educate Your Team

Make sure your team understands how AI can enhance their work. Develop a standard of care that promotes routine use of AI to ensure everyone knows when and how to integrate AI. Provide hands-on training sessions and encourage your team to ask questions. The more knowledgeable your team is, the more effectively they can use AI to improve patient care.

Stay Updated

AI technology is constantly evolving, so it's important to stay informed about the latest advancements. Attend conferences, read industry publications, and network with other dental professionals to keep up with new trends and best practices.

Embrace Your Intelligence

AI can seem intimidating, but when we are reminded that its job is to simulate intelligence by evaluating patterns, it puts you back in the driver's seat. Your intelligence is real. Consider AI as an opportunity to inject your experience, knowledge, and decision-making skills into your case presentation.

The Human Touch Is Enhanced by AI

As we embrace the future of AI in dentistry, it's important to remember that these technologies are here to enhance our skills, not replace them. AI can make our lives easier, aid in connecting with patients, and enhance patient education, but it's our human touch that makes the real difference. We bring empathy, understanding, and a personal connection that no technology can replicate. So, next time your AI assistant suggests a treatment plan or confirms your appointment, appreciate the ways technology is making your job easier.

While AI will change the nature of some healthcare jobs, it is more likely to serve as a powerful tool that enhances the capabilities of dental professionals rather than replacing them. Embracing AI and understanding how it can be integrated into practice can lead to a more efficient, effective, and patient-centered healthcare delivery system.
