Sheer White!™ by CAO Group is a thin, premeasured 20% carbamide peroxide film that goes on easily and stays put, including the interproximal areas, which holds the gel next to the tooth where it belongs. There is no need to take an impression or fabricate whitening trays. This procedure is not technique-sensitive, and the patient experiences instant gratification. Sheer White!™ can be worn for 2 hours or longer, with the best results achieved when the film is worn overnight. Sheer White!™ has been shown to improve VITA A and B shades in 2 to 5 days, and VITA C and D shades within 5 to 10 days. (Patients with bruxism should be advised not to wear the film overnight.)
The patient kit contains five trays, each containing two whitening films. The instructions are simple. After seating the patient and recording the shade of the patient's teeth, remove one tray from the box and peel the cover of the tray open. The plastic tool on the bottom of the tray is for the patient to remove the shrink wrap film from the tray. Have the patient lift out one of the whitening films; the sticky side of the film will be facing up. Instruct the patient to position the film so it is centered on the arch, with the edge of the film just touching the gingiva (Figure 1). The film should be applied firmly and pressed in to place. Starting at the front teeth, have the patient wrap the film onto the lingual surface, using their fingers to adapt the film to their teeth (Figure 2). Repeat these steps with the second film for the other arch.
It is important to review removal instructions with the patient. When removing the film, instruct the patient to grasp one corner and begin to remove it, using a tissue or napkin will help in grasping the film. If the film is not separating easily from the teeth, rinsing with water will assist removal. It is normal for the film to come off in pieces. After removing the film, the patient should brush their teeth to remove any leftover material from their teeth and gums.
Although there has been no reported sensitivity, it is always a possibility when whitening. CAO Group has also designed a film to relieve oral pain and discomfort associated with dental procedures, including thermal changes, and this can be used to reduce any sensitivity experienced after whitening. Sheer DesenZ™ contains potassium nitrate, and will mold to the teeth in the same fashion as Sheer White!™. It is comfortable to wear, and easy to remove when comfort is achieved (wear time of 1 hour for Sheer DesenZ). Because Sheer DesenZ™ does not affect the uptake of the Sheer White!™, patients with a history of sensitivity with other whitening systems can wear Sheer DesenZ™ before and after whitening.
With an 18-month shelf life and lower cost per unit, Sheer White!™ can be an affordable option for many patients. CAO Group offers free marketing materials such as counter displays and posters, but the key to marketing this product is to wear it. Because the film adheres so well, wearing it during office hours and talking with the patients while wearing it is easy.
