This second article focuses on what the authors call “patient-centered” methods to motivate behavioral change, which, in turn, can lead to better outcomes for pregnant patients. The article describes the concept of motivational interviewing (MI), pointing out both the benefits of this patient-focused strategy as well as the limitations of traditional prescriptive, clinician-driven dental health education. The authors provide evidence for the effectiveness of MI and explain how it can be utilized in a clinical setting.
