This CE article focuses on eyewear and other personal protective equipment. The use of personal protective equipment such as face masks and gloves is common in dental offices, but the use of safety glasses is somewhat less common. The author makes a case for considering more thorough incorporation of protective eyewear for the safety of the practice, personnel, and patients. Wearing proper safety glasses can protect both the clinician and patient from preventable eye injuries and infections.

Dental Unit Waterline Contamination: A Review of Research and Findings from a Clinic Setting

Exposure of patients to water of uncertain microbiologic quality is inconsistent with standards of care in dental practice and can be harmful to patients, especially those whose immune systems may be compromised. Bacteria in dental unit waterlines may also be associated with a type of refractory periodontitis that does not respond to treatment well. As the authors explain, dentists and dental hygienists need a reliable, efficient, and cost-effective method to treat bacterial contaminations.
