Technology as a Solution to Access to Care
Bryan Kariya, DDS
The introduction of computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology to dentistry has been one of the major developments in the profession of the past 30 years. Improvements in CAD/CAM systems over the last several years have resulted in a workflow that enables practitioners to provide patients with high-quality restorations during a single office visit, and at lower costs than have been possible with traditional analog workflows. This article reviews the financial considerations for dental practices in implementing CAD/CAM technology, and considers how this technology may serve as a solution to access to care challenges for underserved populations by enabling fast and affordable design and fabrication of restorations.
