This article will present an update on the current generation of resin adhesives and the wide variety of restorations that can be placed with them. The article will review adhesive systems and describe their various classifications, from earlier generations to the etch-and-rinse, self-etch, and universal adhesives of today. It will then explain the clinical applications for different adhesive systems. Adhesion to dentin will be considered in relation to dependence on dentin substructure. The relation of dental adhesives to postoperative sensitivity also will be considered. Finally, consensus recommendations for dental adhesives will be presented. Because of the variety of systems and techniques that are now in use, the article will emphasize the need to follow manufacturer's directions.
