Cementation Basics
Gary Radz, DDS
With no universal cement available in the clinical armamentarium as yet, clinicians must choose from a wide variety of dental cements. Cement selection can be daunting, as the cementation process in restorative dentistry involves multiple factors, including the restoration type and preparation, the retention and resistance form of the restoration, the tooth structure being bonded to the restoration, and the isolation of the restorative field. This article provides guidance to the clinician in selecting dental cements, describing the advantages, disadvantages, and indications based on the restorative material and preparation requirements. Cementation protocols are also explained, including the cleaning and priming of restorations before cementation, and soft tissue control during restoration delivery.
