Kulzer’s iBOND® Universal All-Purpose Adhesive Stands the Test of Time
With more than 30 years' experience in the dental profession, Tree Mainella has seen her fair share of dental products come and go. But some products, the Kulzer Senior Product Manager acknowledges, stand the test of time.
"iBOND® Universal has demonstrated proven clinical success for decades, and dentists worldwide use it for all clinical situations," says the industry veteran. "Its versatility allows clinicians to use it with self-etch, selective-etch, and total-etch techniques, and it is completely compatible with all light-cure, self-cure, and dual-cure resin materials, such as cements, core materials, compomers, and more."
"In fact," adds Mainella, who recently celebrated her 2-year anniversary with Kulzer, "many dentists have also noted to us that they use iBOND Universal as their desensitizing agent alone and experience stellar results. As everyone knows, a patient with no postoperative sensitivity is a beautiful thing!"
Kulzer refers to iBOND Universal as its "all-rounder" for reliable bond strength, stating that the universal light-curing adhesive is used for any bonding technique and all indications. It allows for bonding on composite/compomer, precious metal, nonprecious metal, and zirconia or silicate ceramic, and is a minimally invasive, cost-effective solution for intraoral repairs.
"iBOND Universal is chemically mastered by using a combination of 4-META and MDP monomers, along with some proprietary ingredients. This combination allows a multitude of advantages when using the product," Mainella explains. "Besides the profound desensitizing capabilities of iBOND Universal, 4-META is the hydrophilic compound that seeks out the collagen fibrils within the dentin tubules and quickly attaches to them, forming a strong resin matrix and providing a durable bond with the tooth structure."
The MDP, meanwhile, is the hydrophobic compound, which not only bonds to tooth structures, but also seals the tooth and helps to create a barrier against bacterial invasion, Mainella further explains. "In addition, the MDP bonds tenaciously to many types of dental substrates, such as zirconia, metals, resins, and more. iBOND Universal really gives you the best of both worlds."
Mainella also points out that iBOND Universal is an acetone-based adhesive, which is vastly different than an adhesive containing ethanol. "It is more efficient in carrying the resin into the dentin tubules and will quickly volatize off," she states. "So it doesn't require a whole lot of effort when placing and lightly air-drying the material to ensure evaporation of the carrier and leave a thin adhesive layer on the tooth. Ethanol requires more due diligence on the clinician's part and, if not done correctly, can result in postoperative sensitivity for the patient. This is not an issue when using iBOND Universal. It's easy and intuitive to a degree."
Mainella knows there are many choices for clinicians when it comes to adhesives and other restorative materials. "Kulzer," she says, "realizes that effectiveness and long-term results are important to both clinicians and patients. These are always top-of-mind at Kulzer when manufacturing products."
