Originating in the neurosurgical field, the Bident Bipolar system was developed as the drawbacks of monopolar electrosurgery became apparent. Monopolar units spread current throughout the patient, inadvertently coagulating blood vessels and destroying adjacent tissue. “We developed the bipolar system so that no current flowed through the patient. This prevents tissue damage,” says Jerry Malis, MD, Chief Scientific Officer and Executive Vice President. “With bipolar electrosurgery, we were able to do things that were previously impossible.”

Bipolar electrosurgery provides a wide range of advantages for the dental practitioner: no heat or lateral current spread to adjacent tissues, no tissue charring or shrinkage, and no sparking when contacting implants or metallic restorations. Benefits for the patient include more rapid soft-tissue healing and significantly reduced postsurgical discomfort. This procedure is safe for patients with pacemakers/defibrillators or those patients on anti-coagulants who require bleeding management. The unit can safely contact tooth structure and bone without pulpal damage or hard-/soft-tissue necrosis. There’s no histologic change when it’s used for soft-tissue biopsy specimen retrieval. In contrast to monopolar and laser systems, which require a dry field to cut, the Bident unit works efficiently in irrigated or bloody fields. “It can be used anywhere, in any case, with complete safety,” Malis says.
