We Adapt

It feels like yesterday that I sat down to write my December 2021 editorial. Has 2022 flown by for all of you as it has for me? Through this busyness, perhaps surprisingly, the past year has been fairly prosperous for the dental industry. Dentists and technicians arguably are working harder than ever, and in some instances may have struggled to keep up with the volume of dental work. This is promising for our profession, and it was probably a much-needed distraction after all that we endured during the previous two years. Quality often breeds quantity, and dental laboratories have focused on surpassing these expectations. Of course, all has not been bright during these tumultuous times; we have, sadly, lost many great technicians, friends, and family members along this path, and they will not be forgotten.

As I wrote this, I found myself sitting on a 9-hour flight, returning from my first overseas lecture trip since January 2020. Reflecting back on the past year, I have appeared at many lectures—including hands-on courses and webinars—in various states and several different countries while keeping up my normal 12-hour laboratory workdays. So, yes, it almost feels like the old days—or, should I say, pre-pandemic times—and as I was then, I am mindful of those in our profession who take time away from their work and families to attend these events and who continue to inspire and drive me.

Despite the return to some degree of normality, I continue to be reminded that the world has changed in so many ways. Today, the costs of materials along with the discontinuation of some products presents continued challenges and less profitability. Like always, however, we strive to adapt. Dental technicians seem to find ways to work through these challenges and to evolve with the advancing technology. I admire the work ethic and passion of the many seasoned technicians whom I have known over the years who continue to meet the challenges of the changing world. Younger generations must strive to match what many of you have done and continue to achieve. I hope that, in this newer world, our younger generations will be up for the challenges that we face in adapting and evolving, with the same passion and vigor many of us still have. We, as a community, have helped to evolve the dental profession and, with optimism, I hope that 2022 has finished with a strong foundation for our future.

With the approaching holidays and the usual work rush that ensues, I hope that we all make time for our families and friends. From all of us at the AEGIS Dental Network and BroadcastMed team, we wish you a happy, healthy holiday season.
